ST. STEPHEN - A nonprofit organization affiliated with the St. Stephen Fire Department has voluntarily suspended its gambling permit while an investigation is conducted, according to the Minnesota Gambling Control Board.

Following a compliance review in the fall of 2009, the State Gambling Control Board has suspended the Champlin American Legion's charitable gambling license, effective March 1.

Bingo has been declining in popularity over the past few decades, mainly because of competition from other games of chance and a smoking ban. But operators of charity bingos are pushing to modernize the game to attract a younger crowd.
